Social Media Professionals for Students: Start Your Own Channel

The International Week Seminar at Business College set a new record once again. There were over 300 participants from 14 different schools and 9 countries, both in the auditorium and online. The themes of the seminar day were very timely, as in addition to social media, brain health was also a focus.

Social media professionals Maya Torseke and Gideon Hagström Lung shared their experiences as social media entrepreneurs in their joint presentation. Maya creates content and has built a brand that reaches an audience of millions. She also produces content for her clients.

Gideon runs social media campaigns for companies like Lumene and Marimekko. Additionally, he has founded an Instagram channel for restaurants called @wheretoeatathelsinki.

Maya reviewed the biggest changes in marketing trends for the audience. She refers to traditional advertising with TV and magazine ads as “Mad Men marketing,” named after the TV series of the same name.

This was followed by online marketing with Google ads. Since then, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok have grown into massive advertising platforms where bloggers and influencers also operate.

“The truth is, social media marketing changes very quickly. What is hot today may be gone tomorrow.”

Gideon reminded that in today’s attention economy, the big challenge is how to stand out and engage people. Advertising space is everywhere in the urban environment, with large billboards ensuring visibility.

Placing your own ad on them requires a lot of work, time, and money. Gideon mentioned as an extreme example how a 30-second ad on the giant screen during the American Super Bowl costs eight million dollars. According to him, it is possible to achieve the same visibility on TikTok for 50,000 dollars.

Start Your Own Channel!

The duo believes that social media campaigns work particularly well in reaching and engaging a specific target group. Additionally, they can make purchasing very easy. Social media marketing professionals talk about guerilla marketing, which offers numerous opportunities to build your own campaigns and understand and measure how your marketing works from start to finish.

Maya and Gideon encouraged participants to think about what excites them and what theme they could create their own channel around. For some, it might be ice hockey; for Gideon, it’s restaurant reviews. “My channel has grown quickly and has been found useful. I bring restaurants together and help them increase their visibility. At the same time, I help consumers find suitable restaurants.”

Especially those planning a career in marketing should build their own channels while still studying. Potential employers are interested in how well the applicant knows social media – and how many followers they have.

And it’s never too late to start your own channels.

Gideon´s and Maya´s message for students: Especially those planning a career in marketing should build their own social media channels while still studying.
